Woolwich house fire: Woman dies after huge blaze as two people manage to escape

A woman has died after she was pulled from a burning house and two other people managed to escape the blaze on their own.

The woman was alive when firefighters rescued her from the home in North Woolwich in southeast London on Friday evening, but later died in hospital.

Two other people managed to escape before the fire brigade arrived and were treated for smoke inhalation.

Most of the ground floor and half of the first floor were damaged by the fire which broke out just before 6pm on Friday.

Six fire engines and 40 firefighters attended the scene, and had the fire under control by 7.30pm.

There were 14 calls to 999 after the fire broke out.

The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation, the London Fire Brigade said.

A spokesperson said: "Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a house fire on Sheldrake Close in North Woolwich.

"Most of the ground floor and half of the first floor were damaged by the fire.

"A woman was rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

"She was treated at the scene and taken to hospital where she sadly later died on Friday (26 April).

"Two other people escaped the property before the Brigade arrived and were treated for smoke inhalation."

The spokesperson added: "The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 14 calls to the fire.

"The Brigade was called at 5.57pm and the fire was under control by 7.32pm.

"Fire crews from Plaistow, East Ham, Barking and other surrounding fire stations attended the incident.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
