Woody Allen has claimed he has “done everything the #MeToo movement would love to achieve”.
His comments reiterating his support for the #MeToo movement come just one day after his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, who accused Allen of molesting her as a child, criticised the actor Scarlett Johansson for supporting the filmmaker.
Speaking ahead of the French premiere of A Rainy Day in New York, Allen was asked if he regretted saying that he “should be the poster boy for the #MeToo movement” in 2018.
“Not at all,” he told France 24. “I’ve worked with hundreds of actresses, not one of them has ever complained about me; not a single complaint. I’ve employed women in the top capacity for years and we’ve always paid them the equal of men. I’ve done everything the #MeToo movement would love to achieve.”
Allen’s 2018 comments on #MeToo were made in the context of a renewed allegation of molestation by Farrow, which dates back to 1992 when she was seven years old.
The allegation was consistently denied by Allen. Two investigations were launched at the time and no charges brought.
Earlier this week, Johansson said the director “maintains his innocence” of allegations of sexual abuse against him by Farrow, adding: "I love Woody. I believe him."
On Thursday, Farrow responded to Johansson’s support of her adopted father, saying the actor “has a long way to go in understanding the issue she claims to champion”.
