The newly built venue for artistic gymnastics and other events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games was previewed for the media on Tuesday.

The Ariake Gymnastics Center in Koto Ward, Tokyo, will be the venue for three gymnastic disciplines at the Olympics -- artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline -- and the Paralympic sport of boccia. With a seating capacity of 12,000, the arena was constructed under the concept of "a wooden vessel floating in the bay area." About 2,300 cubic meters of wood was used to build the structure, which has a sense of warmth supplied by the arched timber beams of the roof and the benches made of Japanese cedar.

The center was completed on Oct. 25 at a construction cost of about 20.5 billion yen.
