Wood interest, Cantwell possibility and the defender search - The Everything is Black and White Podcast

Newcastle United are in the market for several players this January as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his squad.

Despite the riches the club have following the October takeover by the Saudi-led consortium, those dealing with United's transfers are finding just how tough it is to get what you want during the January market.

On the latest episode of The Everything is Black and White Podcast , host Andrew Musgrove is joined by The Mirror's Simon Bird to discuss the latest ongoing at Newcastle.

The pair discuss the exit of United from the FA Cup at the hands of League One Cambridge, and the impact that could have on potential future arrivals to the club this month.

Of course, the January market features heavily in the episode and the main talking points include

  • NUFC's search for a striker - is Chris Wood the answer?
  • Kieran Trippier's arrival
  • Sven Botman and Diego Carlos latest - will NUFC move on to new targets?
  • The midfield: Wijnaldum, NDombele and Ramsey linked
  • Todd Cantwell - Norwich would sell, so why?
  • Plus listeners' Qs on Dubravka, Lascelles and the work of the owners

Speaking about what Newcastle need this January, Simon said: "They need a striker - they might need two attacking players.

"They need a centre-half, and if they didn't get anything beyond that, although ideally, you'd get in a midfielder enforcer but if they got a striker and a centre-half I wouldn't be too upset as long as they were quality and good buys.

"So if they got those players in, I wouldn't be panicking because I do think they can score goals and if they tighten it up at the back [they'll be okay.]

"If they got three or four in, I'd be more confident and hopefully injuries don't kick in.

"So two strikers, a defender and a midfield enforcer would be my four priorities and if they get two or three of those it will be looking good."
