Wonder Woman gets a makeover - for boys

Wonder Woman fan Jaxon wore his store-bought costume until it was threadbare. But grandma rushed to the rescue with her own version, right.

An ingenious Gold Coast grandmother has created an amazing Wonder Woman costume for her young grandson, proving the character's universal appeal.

Four-year-old Jaxon loves everything about Wonder Woman; the old television series, the new movie, the cartoons, the toys.

His grandmother, prop-maker Angela Simpson, 50, said he was hooked.

"I'm not sure what it is; he likes the old Wonder Woman, he'll watch trailers on his iPad, he likes the music of Wonder Woman and he loves the new Wonder Woman," she said.

"I think it's the sword and things."

But Jaxon could only buy costumes designed for girls and wore his until it was threadbare.

"He would wear it constantly," Ms Simpson said.

"If it was in the washing machine his mum would have to get it out and dry it so he could put it back on."

He knew exactly who to turn to for help.

Online Ms Simpson goes by the handle Nerfenstein and she has been making and modifying toys and costumes for years.

So when Jaxon asked her to make him armour from the new movie, she eagerly took on the challenge.

"I was like, 'okay, male Wonder Woman armour, how am I going to do this'," she said.

With no patterns, she had to create it from scratch.

It took days of trial and error, using garage-floor foam, craft foam, glue, a Stanley knife, sandpaper and paint.

But the results speak for themselves.

"We went the sort of Roman-Greek armour for him and he really loves it," Ms Simpson said.

As for critics of a little boy liking a female character, Ms Simpson has a simple response.

"He's four, so if it's not dangerous to him and he loves it, I'm not going to say don't love that," she said.

"Plus it's good for him to look up to women as well as men.

"I think that's a good thing and he loves her so why not."

If Jaxon wears this costume out, he knows grandma will not be far away to make him another one.
