Women’s World Cup: USWNT stuns Thailand with four goals in six minutes

The United States women’s national team got off to a perfect start in the 2019 Women’s World Cup by demolishing Thailand in the Group F opener – and the USWNT attack looked unstoppable for a whirlwind six-minute period in the second half.

Team USA carried a 3-0 lead into halftime to all but seal three points, but the lead ballooned to 7-0 after the Americans scored four goals in the span of six minutes.

Samantha Mewis scored her first-ever World Cup goal in the 50th minute, and the Thailand defense looked helpless as Alex Morgan and Rose Lavelle all found the back of the net in quick succession.

The USWNT will move to the top of Group F on goal difference with the win, and will take on Chile on Sunday, June 16th. Team USA will close group stage play on Thursday, June 20th against rival Sweden.

Team USA went on to score six more goals in the second half, to win by a World Cup-record margin of 13 goals. Alex Morgan finished the game with five goals, tying the single-game record set by Michelle Akers in 1991.
