Canada host the seventh Women’s World Cup and kick off the tournament themselves against China on Saturday 6 June at the Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton. This year the tournament coincides with Women’s sport week, a week dedicated to celebrate and increase the profile of women’s sport across the UK.

The England women’s team are taking part in the World Cup after an impressive qualifying campaign. Their recent defeats to pre-tournament favourites Germany and USA have done little to halt the enthusiasm ahead of the competition.

We’d like to see your photos and stories about what effect women’s football has had on your life. Who are you supporting at the World Cup? Did you attend any of your country’s qualifying matches? Are you planning on going to Canada for the tournament? Perhaps you are a resident of one of the six host cities looking forward to experiencing World Cup football on your doorstep? We’d also like to hear about your previous experiences either playing or watching women’s football. How far do you think the sport has come in the last few years, and what challenges still lie ahead?

You can share your women’s football photos, videos and experiences by clicking on the blue ‘Contribute’ button on this article. You can also use the GuardianWitness smartphone app or the new Guardian app and search for ‘GuardianWitness assignments’ – and if you add it to the homepage – you can keep up with all our assignments.
