Day 13 of the Women’s World Cup wraps up Group D play with two matchups that have big implications. Japan and England were the two favorites in the group coming in and now they must play each other on the final day with one not guaranteed a spot in the knockout stages. Argentina’s stunning draw against Japan has given them a chance to advance depending on what happens in the other match.

The Three Lionesses have clinched their spot in the Round of 16, but must get at least a draw in this one to ensure they finish atop the group and get a more favorable matchup going forward. Meanwhile, Japan has some work to do to make sure they don’t crash out of the tournament early. A draw would be good enough for them to secure that second spot in the group. However, if they lose, the door swings wide open for Argentina to walk through. England hasn’t looked dominant so far in their two wins, but they’ll by no means settle for the draw. They’ll want to head into the next round with as much momentum as possible.
Women’s World Cup: Scotland vs Argentina

While all eyes for Argentina will be on the scoreboard hoping for an England win, they must focus and make sure they do their part. Three points against Scotland is the only way they have a chance to advance. After shocking Japan with a 0-0 draw in their first match, they played England as competitively as anyone could’ve expected but narrowly fell 1-0. Despite having yet to score a goal in this tournament, they have a chance to go through. Unfortunately for Scotland, they are playing purely for pride in this last match after two 2-1 losses eliminated them from contention. If it’s any consolation to them, they have a big opportunity to play spoiler as they head out.
