Norway and England will have the honor of getting the 2019 Women’s World Cup quarterfinals underway on Thursday when the first qualifier for the last four will be decided. After failing to make it past the round of 16 in each of the last two World Cups, Norway will return to the quarters with a chance to prove this generation of stars can be title contenders. Standing in their way is 2015 bronze medalists England, who have their eyes on a fourth straight spot in the World Cup’s last eight after reaching that stage in 2007, 2011 and 2015.
Phil Neville’s first experience in a Women’s World Cup has been positive and seen the team win all four games—England has never won more than five matches in a World Cup tournament. There may be an underlying concern about England’s preparation ahead of this clash though. No Group D opponents (Japan, Argentina, Scotland) offered that difficult a threat, while England beat Cameroon, 3-0, in a controversy-filled round of 16 match. Then again, England may have simply captured that winning mentality that’s eluded their teams in major competition for so long.
Norway emerged as 1-0 victors when these teams last met in a friendly in January 2017, with each side boasting two wins in their head-to-head record.
