The last two quarterfinal spots will be decided at the 2019 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday when Italy and China go head-to-head and the Netherlands and Japan close out the round of 16. Italy hasn’t made it into the World Cup’s last eight since the inaugural tournament was held in China 28 years ago, while the Netherlands face 2011 champions Japan seeking their first quarterfinal berth.

After failing to qualify for the past four World Cups, Italy has made a successful return in France by topping a Group C lineup that also included Australia and Brazil. Group C hasn’t been a success story thus far as both those teams have already been eliminated from the last 16 by Norway and France, respectively.
China boasts far more experience in comparison and has progressed to at least the quarterfinals in each of their six World Cup appearances. They scored once and conceded once en route to a third-place finish in Group B and need to unearth some attacking fervor if they’re to advance.

The Netherlands are relative newcomers to the World Cup finals and have matched their debut performance from 2015 by making it to the last 16. Japan has enjoyed great success in recent World Cups, advancing to each of the last two finals and beating the United States to the crown in shock fashion eight years ago.
The Asian nation’s only win so far in France was a 2-1 victory over Scotland, but they folded 2-0 against Group D winners England to suggest they’re more vulnerable this summer. The Netherlands gained confidence as they won three games and topped Group E. The likes of Vivianne Miedema, Jill Roord and Lineth Beerensteyn, all 22-years-old, look ready to lead a Dutch revolution against one of the World Cup’s more established contenders.
