Women’s World Cup: Lindsey Horan equaliser rescues USA to deny Netherlands a famous win

World Cup holders the United States came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and stay top of Group E.

The Dutch, who lost to the USA in the final of the final four years ago, were on course for a famous victory when new Manchester City signing Jill Roord put them ahead in the first half.

The USA were wasteful with their chances and finished the game having had 18 shots on goal.

But their captain Lindsey Horan came to the rescue when she scored an equaliser in the second half.

"I think the first half, we could be a little disappointed in how we played but I think we fixed things right away," said Horan. “The pressure that we got on, the amount of chances and opportunities that came from it - I’m so proud of the team and their response."

The draw means the USA stay top of Group E on four points, but they are only ahead of the Dutch on goal difference.

Their final game is against Portugal next Tuesday in Auckland, while the Netherlands face Vietnam.
