Women's World Cup Golden Boot 2019: Why Megan Rapinoe beat USA teammate Alex Morgan to top scorer

USA‘s Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan both finished with six goals and three assists at the World Cup, but it is the lavender-haired talisman who will take home the Golden Boot.

When two players are tied, the format dictates that the winner is decided by the number of assists they have contributed. In this case, with that field also drawn, it comes down to who has played the least minutes in the tournament.

After missing out on the semi-final due to a hamstring strain, it is the 34-year-old Rapinoe who clinches the crown.

Rapinoe’s six goals came in 394 minutes, while Morgan’s came over 445 minutes of playing time.

Ellen White also finished on six goals, however, she didn’t contribute any assists during England’s great run to the semi-finals.
