We’re moments away from the USWNT kicking off their second Group F match against Chile with a chance to clinch a spot in the Women’s World Cup Round of 16. After days of non-stop debate and controversy after the USA’s historic opening win against Thailand, it’s time to get back to what matters and trying to win their fourth World Cup.

Coming into this tournament, the majority of the discussion surrounding the US Women’s National Team was if they were as good as they were four years ago. After their first match, that narrative quickly changed. A 13-0 win, the biggest margin of victory at any World Cup in FIFA’s history, left some with a bad taste in their mouths. Was it disrespectful to continue to dominate a helpless Thailand team? Were all the goal celebrations too much? No matter which side of that debate you fall on, there’s no doubt that the US Women came here to prove a point and did.
Now it’s time to see what they’re really made of. The Thailand match evolved into nothing more than a glorified training session. How will the USWNT perform against better competition? Chile is a slight step up in that regard, but the champions will still be heavily favored to take the full points.
How will the media frenzy affect the USA, if at all? With three points they’ll book their ticket to the knockout rounds. Jill Ellis will be hoping for a relatively struggle-free showing heading into the clash with fellow group favorites Sweden in the concluding group match.
