England’s 3-0 win over Norway in the World Cup quarter-final set a new peak TV viewing record for women’s football of 7.6million, the BBC has confirmed.
Thursday night’s match in Le Havre was shown live on BBC One, with the broadcaster revealing a 38.6 per cent share of available audience tuned in to see Phil Neville’s side book their place in the semi-finals.
The total TV reach for the tournament is currently at 22.2m, which surpasses the record of 12.4m set during the 2015 World Cup in Canada.
England will go on to face either France or the United States, the defending champions, in Lyon on 2 July.
The Women’s World Cup continues to be shown during prime-time slots on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with hosts France set to tackle the USA in Paris on Friday night.
The remaining quarter-finals will see Italy play Holland on Saturday afternoon followed by Germany against Sweden later that evening, all matches again broadcast live.
