Women's Super League attendance record smashed as Leeds Rhinos lose out to York Valkyrie

The Women's Super League began in style as the clash between Leeds Rhinos and York Valkyrie smashed the competition's record attendance.

5,308 supporters made their way to Headingley to take in the action, as Tara-Jane Stanley masterminded a victory for the visitors, who prevailed 34-12.

It emphatically broke the previous record of 4,235, which was also posted at Headingley for the 2021 Super League Grand Final when St Helens beat the Rhinos.

But Lois Forsell's side couldn't produce a result for the Rhinos fans in attendance. Tries from Tamzin Renouf, Ashleigh Hyde, Hollie Dodd, Liv Gale, Tara-Jane Stanley and Ellie Hendry gave last year's league leaders an opening-round victory.

Keara Bennett and Eloise Hayward responded for the hosts, but it was not enough for Lois Forsell's start. "We just weren't good enough in areas," she said. "We just didn't stick to the game plan."

She continued: "It's exciting for the game and only positive for the growth. It's great that they have some real aspirations."
