Women's Irish Cup: Cliftonville defeat Linfield at Midgely Park in second-round tie

Cliftonville defeated Linfield 3-2 at Midgely Park last night (Friday) in the Irish Cup second-round.

A dramatic late goal from Caitlin McGuinness was enough to take the Reds through to the next round.

Lucy Johnston give the Blues an early lead with her first senior goal for the club.

It didn't take Cliftonville long to reply as a free-kick from Fi Morgan and a cool strike from Abbie McHenry took the Reds in to the break with the lead.

Five minutes in to the second half, Linfield's Rebecca Bassett earned her side a penalty which Vicky Carleton calmly slotted home.

At 2-2, both sides became frantic in their play in search for a winner.

With only three minutes on the clock, Player of the Match, Caitlin McGuinness settled the tie and sent the Reds through in dramatic fashion.

The win came just four days on from Cliftonville's 5-2 dismantling of Linfield in the league.

Elsewhere there wins for Crusaders Strikers after they hammered East Belfast Ladies 8-2 and Lisburn Rangers beat derby rivals Lisburn Ladies 3-1.

The Irish Cup was not held last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic with Glentoran the winners in 2019 and 2019.

The Glens progress to the quarter-final as their opponents Derry City withdrew from the competition.
