Women's husband dies in hospital - then finds her home has been burgled

Police are appealing for the public’s help after an elderly woman returned home from hospital following the death of her husband to find she had been burgled.

The victim had gone to hospital on Friday, March 29 with her 94-year-old husband who then sadly died early Sunday morning.

When the 75-year-old returned to her home on Fernlea Gardens in Easton in Gordano, an hour and a half after her husband had passed away, she found someone had forced entry into the house via the garage and carried out an untidy search of the property.

The burglar stole jewellery which had significant sentimental value, including broaches, pearls and rings belonging to her and items left to her from her grandmother.

Crime scene investigators have examined the scene and officers have carried out house to house enquiries.

Investigating officer, PC James Hawkins, said: “We never underestimate how traumatic and unsettling a burglary is for victims, their family and neighbours.

“This case is particularly upsetting for the homeowner who is already going through an extremely difficult time and we will continue to provide her with support and keep her updated in relation to our investigation.

“As a result of our enquiries so far, we’ve established a neighbour saw a person dressed in grey in the victim’s back garden between 4pm and 5pm on Saturday who could be the offender.

“If you were in the area between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning and saw anything suspicious, or if you specifically saw someone dressed in grey acting oddly on Saturday afternoon, please get in touch.”

Police are asking anybody with information to call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5219069329.
