The Women’s Euros are up and running as England look to defend their crown against the continent’s best.
Spain, led by two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati are the favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the month, and they sent out a message by thumping Portugal on Thursday night. Alexia Putellas was among the scorers in a 5-0 win, sending her nation straight to the top of Group B.
Italy had briefly topped the table thanks to a 1-0 win over Belgium with Arianna Caruso netting the only goal of the game.
Switzerland plays host to 15 other nations across four weeks, culminating with the final in Basel on July 27, 2025. However, they are facing an uphill battle to reach the knockout phase after losing to Norway.
Despite taking the lead just before the half hour mark, they were caught cold in the space of four second half minutes with Julia Stierli’s own goal proving decisive. Norway had the chance to extend their lead but Ada Hegerberg couldn’t convert her penalty, thus denying her a brace and a chance to set the pace for the Golden Boot award.
Finland were the first nation to put points on the board as they overcame Iceland in the tournament opener. Katariina Kosola netted the only goal of the game in the 70th minute after Hildur Antonsdottir had been sent-off for Iceland for two bookable offences.
