Women of Colour Scotland to host special film screening in honour of Black History Month

Empowering group Women of Colour Scotland (WOCS) are set to host a screening event of the 2018 movie 'HERO Inspired by the Extraordinary Life & Times of Mr. Ulric Cross' in honour of Black History Month next month at the Cameo Cinema.

The film, directed by Frances-Anne Solomon, centres around the story of Ulric Cross (Nickolai Salcedo), who in 1941 left his small island home to seek his fortune and survived the Second World War as the RAF's most decorated West Indian.

His life then took a slightly different turn when he made history by becoming a central figure in the Pan-African independence movements sweeping the world throughout the 50s and 60s. He then went on to become a judge and a diplomat.

The movie is meant to shine a light on an important chapter in Caribbean history and it certainly does that, telling the untold stories of those who played a key part in liberating Africa from colonialism.

The cast is full of a number of recognisable faces, including Jimmy Akingbola (Holby City), Joseph Marcell (Fresh Prince of Bel Air) and Fraser James (Terminator).

After the film, viewers are invited to attend a Q&A session with the lead actor in the movie, a producer and another panelist who is yet to be confirmed. A drinks reception will also be held.

The movie does not only promote the incredible life of Ulric Cross but also promotes the women of colour behind the making of the film.

WOCS is a group made up of women with African and Caribbean heritage living in Scotland who want to promote positive change within local communities in order to address social, cultural and economic divides. The group is made up of Celeste Blaize-Gibson, Charmaine Blaize La Caille, Agnes Holmes and Helene Rodger.

The event will be held on October 18, with the film being screened from 6:30pm. Tickets will be priced from £12.10, with tickets being available shortly from the event page on Facebook .
