Women fined for dropping litter

Two Rochdale women have been fined almost £300 each for littering.

Elizabeth Marsh, of Oldham Road, was fined £265 after bags of dumped waste were discovered at the rear of Oldham Road, which contained evidence identifying her as the culprit.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, another woman, aged 20, of Great Lee Walk was fined £265 after dropping a cigarette end and failing to pick it up.

Neither women attended hearings at Rochdale Magistrates Court on Wednesday 31 March, but were found guilty of littering contrary to section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Both women were ordered to each pay a fine of £175, court costs of £75 and victim surcharge of £15 within 14 days.

The woman who dropped the cigarette butt had earlier been issued with a fixed penalty notice, but failed to pay it.
