2021 was certainly a year to remember for women's sport, and it's reflected in the RTE Sportsperson of the Year award nominees.
Six of this year's eight-strong shortlist are women as Kellie Harrington, Rachael Blackmore and Katie Taylor head a star-studded list for the big award.
Paralympic gold medallist Ellen Keane has been nominated after gold medal win in the SB8 100m breaststroke, while fellow Paralympian Jason Smyth is up for the gong as he added a sixth gold medal to his collection with a win in the T13 100m final.
In GAA, Cian Lynch has been named after helping a dominant Limerick side to a third All-Ireland hurling win in just four years. Vicki Wall has also been nominated after her heroic exploits as Meath shocked the Ladies Football world to beat Dublin in this year's All-Ireland final.
Kellie Harrington's Tokyo fairytale has seen her also put forward following her lightweight gold medal triumph, while the ever-dominant Katie Taylor - who fights in Liverpool on Saturday - will also be considered.
Leona Maguire captured the imagination of the nation with her incredible Solheim Cup debut earlier this year and is nominated, while Rachael Blackmore's commanding Cheltenham and Grand National wins sees her round out an illustrious list of candidates.
This year's RTE Sports Awards will air on Saturday December 18, while the candidates for RTÉ Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year, RTÉ Sport Manager of the Year and RTÉ Sport Team of the Year will be announced in the coming days.
