Women arrested on suspicion of neglect after kids found swimming at night in dangerous waters

Two women have been arrested after a Tesco delivery driver spotted children swimming at night in dangerously choppy waters.

The driver raised the alarm after spotting the youngsters in the sea at a Welsh beach on Tuesday night.

Coastguard crews and a rescue helicopter were scrambled to the scene in Caswell Bay after the report of people in the water in pitch black and dangerous conditions at high tide.

When the emergency services arrived, all six - two adults and four children - were back on shore.

Two women were then arrested in connection with the incident, reports WalesOnline.

Following the incident, Mumbles Coastguard tweeted: "Pitch darkness, high tide, blowing a force 4 is not the place for your children's swimming lessons."

South Wales Police said a 34-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a vehicle and child neglect and a 33 year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

They remain in police custody.

An RNLI lifeboat was also dispatched but was stood down before they arrived at the scene.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: "We received a call concerned for the welfare of an adult and children in the sea at Caswell Bay at about 8.40pm yesterday.

"Officers attended along with the Coastguard.

"A 34-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a vehicle and child neglect, a 33-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of child neglect. They remain in police custody."
