An elderly woman has died following a house fire in Cork.
The tragic incident happened at a home in Silversprings Court in the Mayfield area of the city on Saturday evening.
Gardai and other emergency services rushed to the scene at around 8pm - but the woman in her 70s was pronounced dead.
Her body has since been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The scene has been preserved for a technical examination. The Coroner has also been notified.
Gardai are investigating the tragic incident but foul play isn't suspected.
A spokesman said: "A woman in her 70s has died following a fire in a house at Silversprings Court in the Mayfield area of Cork city on Saturday 23rd October, 2021.
"Gardaí and Fire Services were alerted to the incident shortly before 8pm. The sole occupant of the house, a woman in her 70s, was located inside the house by Fire Services personnel, but was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
"The deceased has since been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out. The Coroner has been notified and the scene has been preserved for a technical and forensic examination.
"Gardaí from Mayfield are investigating the incident."
