A 30-year-old woman travelling with three children has been arrested by counter-terrorism police at Birmingham airport on suspicion of planning to travel to Syria.

The woman, from Leicester, was arrested at 9.40am on Wednesday on suspicion of preparing to engage in terrorist acts in the war-torn country.

West Midlands police said officers were working with partner agencies over the welfare of the three children.

A police spokesman said: “The woman’s home address and another associated address are currently being searched. She was arrested under section five of the Terrorism Act. Officers made the arrest under Pace legislation, meaning they have a maximum of 36 hours to question the suspect before charging, releasing, bailing or applying to a court for a warrant of further detention.”
