An Ayrshire lifeboat crew rescued a woman with a 'suspected broken leg' near to Culzean Castle who had to be evacuated by water.

The stricken woman, described as being middle aged, injured herself after going over on rocks at Port Carrick beach next to the historical South Ayrshire site on Sunday.

Emergency services, including Girvan RNLI, raced to the scene at 12.20pm and coastguard teams tried to help the stricken woman.

But due to the high tide coastguard rescue teams were unable to reach the woman using their vehicle.

The crew from Girvan were also unable to reach the woman using their lifeboat.

Instead the rescue crew used a smaller Y-boat and rowed out to the woman who given casualty care treatment at the scene.

The small Y-boat was then hauled back to the main boat quicker using a rocket line which was fired from the all-weather lifeboat.

The woman was given pain relief and taken to Maidens Harbour where ambulance crews were on hand to take her to Ayr Hospital.

A spokesperson for Girvan RNLI said: "We wish a speedy recovery to the casualty.

"If you believe someone to be in trouble on or near the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
