A woman was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash between a car and a lorry on a busy road.
The East Lancashire Road was closed shortly before 10.30am on Tuesday after the incident near Leigh.
Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the scene before an air ambulance landed close to the crash site and airlifted a female driver to hospital.
According to Manchester Evening News , a spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service confirmed that the woman injured in the crash is in a ‘serious condition’.
A number of busy roads were closed after the crash and road closures remain in place seven hours later as emergency services continue to deal with the crash.
People in the area are being told to expect delays as there is no indication when roads will reopen.
Travel site INRIX said: "A580 East Lancashire Road in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to serious accident between A574 Warrington Road (Greyhound Island, Leigh ) and A572 Newton Road (Lane Head traffic lights, Lowton ).
"Collision has occurred within the junction of the A579 Atherleigh Way and the A580 East Lancs Road, the closure has been extended to aid a diversion through Leigh .
"An air ambulance is in attendance.”
