Woman with heart condition told to put on a jumper after heating breaks in council house

The partner of a disabled woman has blasted a council worker after she told him to 'wrap up' when their heating broke.

Gary Evans, who is a full time carer for his partner, called Bristol City Council's emergency line when all of their gas radiators and cooker stopped working at around 3pm on Sunday.

The call handler allegedly said it was not serious enough to send someone out to their Bishopsworth home during the weekend. She then advised the couple to wear more clothes if they were cold.

Temperatures dipped to 3C on Sunday night and Mr Evans said the couple 'were freezing'.

"It's cold in here," said the 59-year-old. "I'm very annoyed with her (call handler).

"My wife isn't well, she's had a heart attack.

"The woman said it wasn't urgent enough and that we should just wrap up.

"It's freezing in here and it's going to get colder.

"Our cookers gone as well so we won't be able to cook anything hot tonight (Sunday).

Council officers attended their address on Monday and fixed their heating.

A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “Heating was restored within 24 hours of the report. We know how important it is to our tenants that issues are fixed as soon as possible, and thank them for their patience while we respond.”
