Woman wins Yomiuri intl prize for work in Rwanda

Mami Rudasingwa, a representative of the Rwanda-based nongovernmental organization Mulindi / Japan One Love Project, will be awarded the 25th Yomiuri International Cooperation Prize for her steady efforts to make and provide artificial limbs for free to people who have lost arms or legs.

Rudasingwa, 55, a native of Japan, founded a workshop to produce artificial limbs in the Rwandan capital of Kigali in 1997. Ever since, she has overseen efforts to provide artificial limbs and walking sticks to more than 8,600 people, including survivors of the 1994 genocide in the country, in an effort to help them live independent lives. She has also worked to promote sports for disabled people in Rwanda.

An award ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 20 in Tokyo. Rudasingwa will also receive 5 million yen at the ceremony.

A special report on the project will appear in Saturday's issue of The Japan News.
