Woman wins new car for £20 thanks to St Andrew's Hospice raffle that raised £40k

A lucky woman got in gear to celebrate after she cruised off with a brand new car – for just £20.

Ecstatic Audrey Allen, 50, won the white Dacia Sandero in St Andrew’s Hospice’s latest grand car raffle which has raised “around £40,000” for the Airdrie-based facility.

Pat Keenan of Airdrie scooped the second prize of £750 and Janette Leyden of Crawfordjohn won the third prize of £250.

Audrey, from Wishaw, said: “My husband Stephen got a call on the day the draw was made asking me to phone Bruce back at the hospice. I called back when I finished work and he gave me the good news.”

Audrey realised she was a winner but didn’t believe she would be driving off with the new car.

She said: “I knew third prize was £250 and second prize was £750, and first prize was the car. I just thought, ‘Oh brilliant, at least I’ve won £250’.

“Then he said you have actually won the car so I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s fantastic’.”

Officer manager Audrey continued: “My mum passed away in the hospice in 2002 – the year before my daughter was born.

“I’ve supported the hospice ever since; they send me booklets of raffle tickets every year through the post and I just buy them all myself.

“They sent me two booklets of 10 so I got a new car for £20. That’s a very good return.”

Hospice chief rxecutive Bruce High drew the three winning tickets, alongside Andy Thorogood from raffle sponsor Bonnar Accident Law.

John Brady, head of fundraising at the hospice, said: “We are delighted that the grand car raffle has raised around £40,000 this year.

“We’d like to thank Bonnar Accident Law for generously making the car available as the top prize.

“It’s thanks to the many kind-hearted people who buy raffle tickets, purchase goods in our shops, leave gifts in their wills and take part in our events that the hospice is able to continue providing quality specialist palliative care to the people of Lanarkshire.”
