Woman who started petition for Brexit to be cancelled 'receives death threats' as it hits four million signatures

A petition to stop Brexit now has more than four and a half million signatures, but the woman behind it all has said she is receiving death threats.

The petition, which was created on the February 14, began gaining signatures on Wednesday and crashed the petition website several times on Thurday after  Theresa May 's speech criticising MPs for not backing her Brexit deal.

It calls on the Government to revoke Article 50, and says: "The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'.

"We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU. A People's Vote may not happen - so vote now."

But after gaining widespread attention, the creator Margaret Georgiadou, whose name appears on the site, has found herself the subject of terrifying threats.

Writing on her Twitter page, Ms Georgiadou said: "Hi - am the person responsible for the Revoke Art 50 petition.

"Just needed to tell you that 1. am currently visiting Cyprus. and 2. last night I had three telephoned death threats. (!)

"Who wants Brexit so much that they are prepared to kill for it?"

The tweet has been liked more than 27,000 times and inundated with comments offering Ms Georgiadou support.

It comes as the European Union looks set to offer to delay Brexit until May 22, so long as MPs approve Theresa May's withdrawal deal in a House of Commons vote next week.

Today, March 23, members of the public took over the street of London for The Put It To The People rally.

Organisers claim one million people have taken part in the march calling for the public to be given the final say on Brexit.
