Woman who spots 5G mast when out walking the dogs claims 'she was not consulted'

A Liverpool woman who spotted a 5G phone mast at the bottom of her road when out walking her dogs has complained she was not consulted.

Pat Goodwin spotted the 17.5m high phone tower on Eaton Road in West Derby on Tuesday morning.

Ms Goodwin, who has lived in the area for over a decade, said she was not aware of any consultation and was baffled as to how the mast "suddenly appeared."

The Telefonica O2 mast is near the entrance to Walker Playing fields on Eaton Road, opposite a parade of shops. The new tower is near to an existing phone mast.

Liverpool Council said locals in the area were consulted about the new mast.

Ms Goodwin said: "It's not the end of the world but I am not happy. The main point is that nobody asked for my opinion on building another mast on Eaton Road. I thought that locals had to be consulted as part of the planning process. "

Ms Goodwin said she did not wish to be seen as a 'Nimby' (not in my back yard)

She said: "I don't want to be seen as that type of person and I am not against 5G like some people are. But I just think someone should have at least asked for my opinion. There is already one phone mast on Eaton Road and I am not sure we need a second.

"I have spoken to other people in the area who have also said that they were not consulted.

"It just seems to have popped up with no warning."

Liverpool Council approved the plans by Telefonica 02 for the phone mast last April.

A spokesperson for Liverpool Council confirmed local residents were consulted about the new mast on Eaton Road.

A spokesperson for Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Ltd, the company which manages the mobile network infrastructure for Telefonica 02, said: "We manage O2’s planning approvals and can confirm that planning approval was obtained for these works in August 2020.

"The site is providing improved digital connectivity to the area, its local residents and businesses.

"As part of best practice guidelines which we follow, extensive consultation was conducted with relevant local stakeholders prior to submission of the application."
