Woman who spat at police during coronavirus pandemic handed suspended jail term

A Knowle woman who spat at emergency workers, including a police inspector, has been handed a suspended jail term.

The case of Jenna Curtis was heard at Bristol Magistrates' Court on February 3.

The 35-year-old, of Ilminster Avenue, pleaded guilty to assaulting PC Webster in Knowle on October 12 last year.

She also pleaded guilty to assaulting PC Laflin, Police Sergeant Lisa Colton and Police Inspector Fawsett on the same day.

The offence of assaulting an emergency worker is contrary to the Criminal Justice Act 1988 and Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018.

Magistrates handed her 20 weeks' prison suspended for 18 months.

They said the reason for the custodial sentence was due to Curtis spitting at officers during the global coronavirus pandemic.

They told her to comply with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and participate in any activity as required up to a maximum of 10 days.

Curtis was ordered to pay £625 compensation to the police officers and £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The penalty is to be paid at £71 a month from March 1.
