Woman who feels threatened by telephone pole vows to leave country after protest

A woman has vowed to leave the country after her sit-down protest aimed at stopping work on an 'intimidating' telephone poll fell of deaf ears.

Sally Griffiths was threatened with arrest after taking a stand against telecommunications giant BT, which has erected the 25ft mast outside her home in Wallasey, Wirral.

Workmen were trying to fit wire to the structure, which was put up last month and has been the focus of a one-woman campaign by Ms Griffiths ever since.

The 56-year-old painter and decorator says it's has left her in tears and unable to sleep.

Now, after 30 years in the property, she says she'll head home to Egypt if nothing is done, reports The Liverpool Echo.

She previously said: "I can't sleep at night anymore. It's affecting so many parts of my life. It's so tall I feel threatened by it."

She's terrified it's going to snap in high winds and topple on to her as she sleeps.

Plans to install the mast were not clearly advertised, with the wrong street name on a sign causing confusion, and when Ms Griffiths first raised her concerns BT said it would investigate.

Since then more than 200 residents have signed a petition asking for the company to move the poll and Ms Griffiths says she's found an alternative "beautiful spot" for it.

But work has continued and when staff turned up on Thursday Ms Griffiths took matters into her own hands, sitting down next to it and stopping them working.

Police threatened to arrest her under the Trade Union Act and a local councillor warned her it wasn't worth going to prison over, so reluctantly she surrendered.

She said: "I'm gutted. I didn't sleep last night. I felt like I didn't exist.

"I don't feel like eating, and last night I went down to the beach and had a good cry."

She's now in the process of renting her house out and booking flights.

Merseyside Police confirmed they attended and gave the woman advice.
