Woman who died in house fire in Nottinghamshire has been named by police

A 75-year-old woman who died in a house fire in Costock has been named as Mary Shaw.

Nottinghamshire Police says she was also known as 'Lynette', and her body was recovered from a house in Manor Close after the fire was put out in the early hours of Saturday, November 7.

A cordon remained at the scene until Monday, November 9 while an investigation into the circumstances of her death was conducted.

While this is ongoing, it is not currently being treated as suspicious.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service area manager Damien West has now urged people to check on their elderly relatives and neighbours to make sure they have the correct fire safety precautions in their homes.

He said: "Our thoughts are with Mary’s family, friends and the local community at this time. This tragic incident reminds us all of the devastating consequences that a fire can have and I would urge everyone to take a moment to check their own homes.

“We would always encourage people to ensure they have working smoke alarms on each floor of their home, to have a night-time routine and to ensure that appliances in their home are regularly checked and tested."

A man in his 60s was also taken to hospital as a precaution following the incident which happened at around 3.20am.

Detective Inspector Rachael North, of Nottinghamshire Police, added: “This was a tragic incident that sadly resulted in the loss of a life.

“A man who was taken to hospital for treatment for injuries that are not life-threatening is on the way to making a full recovery.

“Mary’s family have asked for privacy during this difficult time.”
