He was said to have been fighting for his life in hospital in the wake of the smash.

GMP have now confirmed his condition has improved.

A spokesman for the force said he is now 'stable', but is not expected to be discharged in the near future.

Police are trying to piece together what happened in the moments before the crash, which happened at around 12.40pm, and are urging any with information - particularly those with dash cam footage - to come forward.

"This happened at a busy time of day, so I would like to take this opportunity to make a direct plea to anyone who may have seen anything that can assist our enquiries.

"We’re particularly keen to speak to anyone witnesses with dash cam footage who saw the BMW in the lead up to the collision.

"If you have any information that could help - please get in touch as a matter of urgency."
