Woman who died after being hit by car on West Lothian road is named

A woman who died after being hit by a car on the A71 has been named.

Just after 7am on Thursday, December 16, a woman died after being struck by a car on the A71 just west of the village of Wilkieston.

She has been named as 65-year-old Gillian Mitchell from Kirknewton.

The collision also involved a blue Ford Fiesta car, which was travelling west at the time. The 20-year-old male driver of the car was uninjured.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident. In particular, officers are keen to speak to a motorcyclist who was travelling eastbound on the A71 immediately towards Wilkieston who may have witnessed the incident.

The motorcyclist is sought as a witness to the collision.

Sergeant Peter Houston said: “I am appealing for anyone who may have been on the A71 around the time of the incident to contact us. I would ask motorists with dash cam devices to check their footage as it could provide us with significant details which would assist our investigation.

"I would like to ask the motorcyclist to get in touch with us, although I do wish to stress the rider is not believed to have been involved in the incident but may have information which could be vital in our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident 0524 of 16 December 2021.
