Woman who came to Britain for a better life left battered in attack

(Picture: PA Wire)

A young woman had her head smashed against a brick wall in a random attack days after arriving in London to begin a new life.

The woman suffered a fractured skull, severe injuries to her face and bruising to her body after she was pushed violently from behind as she walked home from work.

She phoned her sister for help but was so new to the city, she couldn’t explain where she was.

Speaking to the Standard, she said the unprovoked attack had left her scared to go out and traumatised.

She said: “I feel awful, I am scared to leave the house now. I can’t make sense of what happened to me because the attacker didn’t steal anything — everything I had fell to the floor.

“I could hear footsteps — a skipping sound behind me — and I stepped aside to let the person pass. The next thing was I was bleeding on the ground. Was this done as a joke or for fun? That person has ruined my life.”

The woman had begun working with a care agency as a live-in carer for a 33-year-old disabled woman in Oval less than a fortnight before.

She said: “I don’t know whether I will stay in London. People told me this area was safe.”

Her sister said: “It was her dream to come to London. She wanted to go on to university to study translation.”

The attack took place at around 8pm on March 18 as she was walking along Minerva Close in Oval, having dropped her patient at a samba music class nearby.

“When I answered the phone to her after the attack she was crying, She couldn’t name the street she was on because everything was so new to her. I was shaking with worry.”

Her sister added: “The attack was completely unprovoked. I have been here for 10 years and I have never experienced anything like it. I would appreciate anyone’s help with my sister’s case.”

A spokeswoman from the Met said: “We are waiting for the victim to give her statement before the investigation continues.”
