Woman who attacked two carers with a blade has sentence adjourned

Further assessment is being carried out on a mental health patient who stabbed two carers.

Rebecca Churchman was being driven on the M5 between hospitals in Birmingham and Haverfordwest when she produced a blade from her bag and stabbed the two men in their necks.

The 35-year-old, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to wounding Peter Wilson and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on David McCarthy in June last year.

Jailed in Bristol and North Somerset this week

Churchman, who is currently being cared for in a clinic in Bridgend, was to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court. (May 20)

But Dr Alison Witts told Judge Julian Lambert she would like to carry out further, comprehensive assessment of Churchman's mental health disorder in order to recommend the most appropriate course in the case.

Judge Lambert imposed an Interim Hospital Order allowing for Churchman to be assessed for a further 12 weeks.

The judge reserved the case to himself and adjourned sentence to August 2, at which Churchman's presence is excused.
