Woman who allegedly abducted 5yo child 'was invited into house'

Police say a woman who allegedly attempted to abduct a five-year-old Biloela child from their home yesterday was invited inside.

Detective Sergeant Damien Smith said the woman was not known to the mother or child, but was "loosely associated" with other occupants of the house.

Police were unable to indicate why the meeting occurred at the property.

Detective Sergeant Smith described the woman as a "loose associate of other people at the house … not known to the child or her mum".

"They were inside at the time," he said.

"Mum was having a rest, when some occupants returned, they noticed the child was missing with the vehicle."

The 24-year-old Emerald woman then allegedly took the child in a car belonging to someone else in the home, and arrived 100 kilometres north-east at Calliope about 5:00pm.

Det Sgt Smith said the woman and the child visited a fast-food business at Calliope where they were spotted by a member of the public.

They were intercepted by police west of Calliope on the Dawson Highway soon after.

He said the child was tired but in "good spirits".

The 24-year-old woman was charged with a range of offences, including attempted abduction of a child, failure to comply with a learner's permit and unlawful use of a car.

She will appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court tomorrow.
