Woman who abused kids at EK house for years back in dock

A woman jailed for three years for sexually abusing children attacked a custody officer in a fit of rage after she was sentenced.

Samantha Smith found herself back in the dock at Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday.

She admitted carrying out the assault as she was being taken to the cells in November last year.

Smith, 31, formerly of Prior Street, Blantyre, had been convicted of molesting two children at a house in East Kilbride over a period of several years from 2009.

She protested her innocence as she was being led away, telling Sheriff Douglas Brown: “Paedophiles should be hung, not put in jail. If I’m a paedophile hang me.”

Sheriff Brown also dealt with the latest case.

Morag McLintock, prosecuting, told him: “The accused was not happy about being found guilty by the jury.

“Your lordship asked that she be removed from the court.

“Smith swore at a custody officer, struggled with her and kicked her on the stomach.

“This resulted in the officer falling to the ground. Colleagues were required to assist and to separate the accused from her.

“Thankfully the officer did not require medication or suffer any injury as a result of the accused’s actions towards her.”

Earlier, after a jury had found her guilty, Smith screamed “I’m not a beast.

Smith’s lawyer said her behaviour on being sentenced was “totally out of order” and she wished to apologise.

The court heard her earliest date of release from the three-year sentence is in May next year.

Sheriff Brown jailed Smith for five months with immediate effect.
