Woman warns shower habit could make your hair fall out - but hairdressers disagree

We all aspire to silky locks, but our post-shower habits may be having the opposite effect, according to one self-appointed beauty aficionado on TikTok. If you wrap your freshly-washed hair up in a fluffy towel, you're apparently making a big mistake, as Amy Diala claims it could be making your hair fall out.

This will come as news to many of us who routinely grab for the nearest towel after hair washing, tightly bounding our tresses up before getting the hair dryer out and finishing the job.

Posting a TikTok video to warn others of the beauty mishap that most of us do daily, Amy's advice has since amassed more than 72,000 likes on the platform as people are shocked at the hack.

Filming herself drying her own hair, Amy says in the clip: "If you're going to take my advice on one thing, please take it on this".

"Do not ever put your hair up in a towel. Literally, the worst thing you can do for your hair", she claims.

The woman explains that wet hair is weaker and when you wrap your hair into a towel, it will pull at your roots and make it even more vulnerable to breakage.

Fortunately, Amy comes up with an alternative - ditch the damaging towels and embrace the T-shirt turban to dry your hair.

It’s possibly not as absorbent as a towel, but Amy says it's kinder to your locks. She demonstrates first by brushing her hair, from bottom to top, then scrunches the ends of her hair and moves up to the top of her head with a purple shirt.

"I recommend putting in oil at the ends of your hair, especially when your hair is wet, and always use a heat protectant," Amy adds.

Some people have disputed Amy's claims in the comments section of the video, including a hairdresser who wrote: "Lol I’m a hairdresser & trust me, it’s not that bad".

Another person said: "It’s actually not bad for your hair just use a microfiber towel not shirts or regular towels but microfiber it’s more gentle / better than both".

Hair expert and stylist Darren Childs’ of Zoichi Hair told The Mirror that in his opinion, using a towel on wet hair does not cause it to fall out, but echoed the microfibre towel recommendation that many commenters suggested.

He does say that "vigorous rubbing or massage can cause hair loss" but adds "we recommend using a micro-towel to absorb the water and it is kinder to hair".

Other people praised Amy's claims, with one writing: "Loving all these hair tips".

Another said: "I have a towel just to do this haha thank youu!!".
