Woman wants to find stranger who appeared out of the dark

A woman found herself alone in the dark when a stranger approached her with a proposition.

Elizabeth Norton, 24, was cycling home from the doctors in Birkenhead at 6.45pm when her rear bike light started to flash on and off.

After 10 minutes struggling to fix the light, Elizabeth was worried she'd have to walk home alone, cold in the dark, as she had done many times before.

Elizabeth would sometimes encounter problems cycling home at night when she used to work in Birkenhead as a teenager

She'd feel "angry and frustrated" having to do a 45 minute walk by herself if her bike broke, when a cycle ride would be only 15 minutes.

The Wallasey woman told the ECHO : "I was 18 or 19 at that time. I'm 24 now, so being a young girl walking alone, it's not pleasant.

"Especially if it's the middle of the winter.

"You wish people would even say, 'Are you alright?', even if they couldn't help me. It would've been nice."

"I used to work up there, like 10 o'clock at night. It used to be quite dangerous because you used to get some crazies.

"So it was very important [to have a working light], because one false move and you're knocked off your bike, so I always make sure I've got at least a decent backlight."

Last week, on Friday, December 3, a kind stranger appeared beside her on a bike and insisted Elizabeth take his spare light, allowing her to get home safely.

Elizabeth refused at first, but the stranger wouldn't leave her to suffer alone.

She told the ECHO : "It was lovely. It still touches me today. When I used to work in Birkenhead, there have been times when I had flat tyres and I've had to walk all on my own to Wallasey at 10pm.

"It's so touching. You think 'Oh, there are some decent people out there'."

She added: "I wish I could find him and give him a hug."

Elizabeth will keep the light on hand for if she ever encounters someone in need of help.

She told the ECHO : "How many times have I been on my own and no one helped me? I need to put my hand out for people as well if people are stuck. Every little helps, you know, just a little, kind gesture, or an 'are you okay'."
