Woman walks up to child and slaps her in middle of Newcastle city centre

A seven-year-old child was assaulted by a grown woman in Newcastle city centre while out with her mum, police say.

The mother was walking on Grainger Street with her young daughter when they were approached by a woman they did not know.

The suspect is then alleged to have slapped the child before making off from the scene.

Northumbria Police has now released a CCTV image of a woman they would like to speak to in connection with the investigation.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Enquiries to identify the woman in question are ongoing and police have now released an image of a woman they want to speak to.

“She was in the area of the assault when the incident took place and could assist police with their investigation.

“The woman, or anyone who knows her identity, is encouraged to contact police on 101 quoting log 364 03/01/19 or email 3220@northumbria.pnn.police.uk.”
