In a unique turn of events, a woman who showed “no signs, no morning sickness” has given birth while attending the wild, wild Burning Man festival.
As they say, what happens in Burning Man stays in Burning Man… unless it’s a whole child.
On August 27, Kayla Thompson, 36 — who showed no signs of pregnancy — unexpectedly went into labour while attending the notorious Burning Man Fest in Black Rock City, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Per the publication, Kayla’s husband, Kasey, recalled his wife giving birth in their RV right before dawn. Thankfully, in what is truly a blessing from the Burning Man gods, a bunch of medical professionals set up camp right next to them.
“I just started yelling for anyone to come help me,” he told the publication.
“In a matter of minutes, we had an [obstetrician], a NICU [neonatal intensive care unit] nurse, a pediatrician in there — I don’t know where they all came from, they just came.”
Shortly after a bit of yelling and some pushing and shoving, Kasey eventually gave birth to baby Aurora, who doctors estimated to be a month premature, weighing roughly over 1.5kgs (3.5 lbs).
Following the Burning Man birth, the couple were transported to the medical tent, where they waited for a helicopter to take the child to a NICU in Reno.
The new parents decided to send Aurora alone as there wasn’t space for either parent to fly out with her.

“The medical staff at Burning Man grabbed me and just hugged me and said he’s not going to let her out of her sight,” Kasey told the Los Angeles Times.
“He kept reassuring me she’s going to be OK.”
Kasey went on to tell the publication that “it was absolutely, 100 per cent, a cryptic pregnancy”, adding she had “no signs, no morning sickness”, and that “she wasn’t even showing”.
The couple are now in Reno, where baby Aurora has remained in NICU.
Lacey Paxman, Aurora’s aunt, has since opened up a GoFundMe, with proceeds going towards the new family.

“On Wednesday, August 27th, our family was blessed with the surprise arrival of a beautiful baby girl. My brother and his wife had no idea they were expecting, and their little one made her dramatic entrance while they were out of state at Burning Man,” the GoFundMe’s description began.
“Baby girl arrived weighing 3 lbs 9.6 oz and measuring 16.5 inches long. She is currently in the NICU, gaining strength every day. Mom and baby are both doing okay, but she will need to stay in the hospital until she is ready to come home.
“Since this is their first child and the pregnancy was completely unexpected, my brother and his wife don’t have anything prepared—no baby supplies, no nursery, nothing at all. On top of that, the unexpected circumstances have created a heavy financial burden: NICU care (with no release date yet), medical bills, and travel and lodging expenses while they are far from home”
At the time of writing, Paxman has raised more than USD$10,687 (AUD$6985.08) in donations for the Burning Man baby.
