Woman treats grandson to ice cream but can't believe eyes when she sees receipt

These days the prices of everything just keep going up, but there are still some things you don't expect to pay through the roof for.

One of those things is a plain vanilla ice cream cone.

However a grandmother got a shock recently when she was handed her change for a sweet treat for her nine-year-old grandson, Kookie, in Dublin city centre, reports Dublin Live.

Trish Nolan couldn't believe her eyes when she saw her receipt from Gino's Gelato, stating that her regular cone cost nearly €6 (£5.54), while the small one was €4.30.

The total cost of her two vanilla ice cream cones was more than £10 in the George's Street branch of the Irish gelato chain.

Trish, from Blessington, Co Wicklow, said: "Kookie loves vanilla ice cream so we stopped for a treat when I came to see him in Dublin.

"I was surprised to only get small change from a €20 note. At first, I thought they had accidentally overcharged us, but when I looked at the receipt, I saw it really was that expensive.

"It seemed a lot for two cones. It's 10 times the price of an ice cream in McDonald's. But they do taste particularly good!"

Her grandson, who considers himself an ice cream expert, agreed with the comment about taste, adding that it was worth every penny.

"It may be much more expensive but it's the best ice cream cone in Dublin. I say: no pay - no gain."

He continued: "It's not the best ice cream of all though, that's Haagen Dazs vanilla. But Gino's is not really ice cream, it's gelato."

Gino’s Gelato is an Irish family business operating since 2009. Its co-owners Jonathan Kirwan from Bray and Anthony Murphy from Limerick both come from generations of ice-cream sellers.

They established the company in response to a demand for ice-cream “like you get in Italy” to be available in Ireland.

Mirror Online have contacted Gino's Gelato for comment on their pricing.
