Woman tragically died after 'choking' on chewing gum

An inquest heard how a woman with multiple sclerosis (MS) is believed to have choked to death on a piece of chewing gum.

55-year-old Sulwen Hefina Jones was discovered in her bedroom on October 5 by her sister.

A formal inquest into the death of Miss Jones was opened in Caernarfon, Wales, on October 14, reports North Wales Live.

It heard how Miss Jones suffered from multiple sclerosis - a lifelong, incurable condition that can affect the brain, nerves and spinal cord and in some cases can cause serious disability.

Acting senior coroner Katie Sutherland said that when Miss Jones was found, there was chewing gum next to the bed and on the floor.

The emergency services were called to the scene but sadly Miss Jones could not be saved.

Ms Sutherland said: "Miss Jones's airway was partially obscured by a piece of chewing gum.

"A postmortem carried out on October 12 gave a provisional cause of death as aspiration of chewing gum due to multiple sclerosis.

"I want to hear evidence of the effect of this, therefore the full inquest will be adjourned pending the investigation into Miss Jones' death and will be listed on the first available opportunity."
