Woman told police she 'did not know' why she was at large illegal gathering

A woman claimed to not know where she was when she was found on a sofa after police were called to reports of 60 to 70 students breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Police attended Riverside Point, Radmarsh Road, Lenton, at 4.50am on November 22 last year amid claims of fireworks being set off and a breach of the regulations in place during the pandemic.

As officers arrived, people started moving away towards accommodation blocks and some covered their faces.

One officer found two females in a communal area. One was Rojan Babay, 20, of Midland Way, Lenton, who was on a sofa claiming not to know where she was and why she was there.

She provided her name and date of birth and showed an officer her Instagram account in the same name.

The officer advised them they would receive a fixed penalty notice for breaching the coronavirus regulations.

Babay was cautioned, a trial in her absence heard at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

The officer had explained that, if the fine was paid, there was no requirement to go to court.

Babay was advised to leave the address.

Magistrates heard on Tuesday, June 22, she did not pay the fixed penalty.

A panel of three magistrates heard the case against Babay, who was accused of participating in an indoor gathering on November 22 which consisted of two or more people at Riverside Point.

They found the matter proved in her absence.

She was fined £1,100, ordered to pay costs of £200 and a victim surcharge of £110.
