Woman told job interview was 'fantastic' - but is rejected due to 'strong Welsh accent'

No form of rejection is ever easy to take, but some are certainly more difficult to handle than others.

And one woman has had people's jaws dropping as she shared a look at a rejection email she was sent following a recent job interview.

Eluned Anderson from Cardiff took to social media to share a screenshot of the email in which she was told that recruiters at the company thought she was "fantastic".

They go on to say that she "performed very well" and that her "skillset would reflect well in the role".

However, things take a turn as you keep reading, as they ultimately decide not to offer Eluned the position due to her "strong Welsh accent and regional activities".

Alongside the email, the 22-year-old who is a regional ambassador for Holocaust UK, wrote: "First time I've ever been told I've got a strong Welsh accent, so I suppose that's a win?"

The full email reads: "Hi Ellie, Thank you so much for your time in applying for the role of [job title removed] and attending the interview at such short notice.

"We thought you were fantastic and performed well throughout. Your skillset would reflect well in the role.

"I'm sorry to say, however, that we have decided not to proceed with your application. It was decided that your strong Welsh accent, accompanied by your regional activities, would not suit the office environment.

"Thanks once again for your interest and time."

Thousands of people have liked, shared and replied to the tweet, with many pointing out that Eluned is being "discriminated" against.

Under the Equality Act 2010, it is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of their race, including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin.

One person said: "I think you'll find that reply furnishes you with a strong claim for employment discrimination. Seriously - take advice."

Another wrote: "I am sorry what????? This is WILDLY not okay?!"

A third responded: "If they're doing that, what else are they discriminating against? I'm stunned."

"This is horrible and definitely discrimination under the Equality Act," added Deeba Syed, an employment lawyer, who went on to offer a chat.

Similarly, Jamie Hanley of Trade Union Law offered to have his team take a look at the matter on behalf of Eluned.
