Police have upgraded charges against a Murray Bridge woman who allegedly struck a pedestrian who died overnight.

Lisa Maria Trewren, 38, allegedly hit the Mount Barker resident who had been walking along the shoulder of Mount Barker Road at Totness, near Hahndorf, on Monday night.

The 31-year-old victim was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with life-threatening injuries and died last night.

On Tuesday, the Adelaide Magistrates Court heard Ms Trewren had driven while disqualified and that her 13-year-old son was in the front passenger seat at the time.

Police prosecutors opposed her bail and told the court Ms Trewren's driving disqualification was the result of a previous drink driving offence.

"The fact is she, not two months ago, attended court and was issued with a disqualification, a very simple order of the court to abide by," the prosecutor said.

The court also heard Ms Trewren allegedly returned a positive blood alcohol reading at the scene, but later refused a second test.

A home detention report will be prepared, and the woman will next face court later this month.

Police upgraded Ms Trewren's charges to causing death by dangerous driving, after her alleged victim died in hospital overnight.

The court heard the victim was pushing a two-wheeled sack truck along the eastern bitumen shoulder of the road, carrying cans for recycling, when struck by the car.

Separately, a 25-year-old Mount Gambier man died in a crash on the Riddoch Highway, about 10 kilometres south of Penola, in the state's south-east on Tuesday morning.

His 24-year-old female passenger was taken to Mount Gambier Hospital with serious injuries.
