A 56-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly "severing" her husband's penis at their home in Newport, North Carolina.
Victoria Frabutt is alleged to have tied up James Frabutt before attacking him, early on Tuesday morning, according to reports made at the scene, based on an interview with her husband, who was still conscious when found by police.
The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office, who arrived at the property at 4am, have said motive for the castration is currently unclear.
A statement from the Sheriff’s office said deputies “were able to recover the body part where it was immediately put on ice and transported to medical personnel”.
Mr Frabutt was taken by paramedics to Vidant Medical Center, a level one trauma centre in Greenville more than 100km away, where he is receiving treatment.
His current condition is unknown.
Ms Frabutt was arrested and charged with malicious castration on the same day, as well as kidnapping. She is currently being held on a $100,000 bond.
Her first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
